Lighting a Bellevue Kitchen for the Gray Months

Every fall we get the same kind of phone call. Someone moved to Bellevue in the spring, loved the kitchen when they toured the house, and now, somewhere around the first week of November, they have noticed that they cannot see what they are cutting. The kitchen did not change. The sky did.

Near the winter solstice this part of Washington gets a little over eight hours of daylight, and on a typical cloudy day a lot of that daylight is flat and weak by the time it gets through a kitchen window. If your kitchen was designed around sunshine, or not really designed around light at all, the gray months expose it.

This is a walk through how we think about lighting a kitchen for those months, what tends to go wrong, and how to decide how much work it is actually worth doing.

Why So Many Kitchens Feel Dark Here

Most dim kitchens we see share a handful of problems, and they usually stack on top of each other.

One fixture in the middle of the ceiling

A single surface fixture or a small cluster of lights in the center of the room lights the floor well enough. But you do not work in the middle of the floor. You stand at the counter with your back to that light, and your body blocks it. The result is a shadow falling exactly where you are working.

Upper cabinets with nothing under them

Upper cabinets hang roughly 18 inches above the counter and project about a foot out from the wall. That is a roof over the back half of your work surface. Ceiling light cannot get under it, so the backsplash area, where the outlets, the coffee maker and the cutting board live, is the darkest strip in the room.

A small window with a high sill

Kitchens in the ramblers and split levels built around Lake Hills, Crossroads, Newport Hills and Eastgate in the 1950s and 1960s often have a modest window centered over the sink. On a bright day it is pleasant. On a gray one it is a pale rectangle that lights the sink and very little else.

Dark surfaces that swallow light

Cherry or espresso stained cabinets, dark granite and a deep colored tile backsplash can look rich in a well lit photo. In real winter light they absorb most of what hits them. The same fixtures in a room with pale matte finishes will feel noticeably brighter.

Glare from glossy finishes

The opposite problem shows up too. High gloss cabinet doors and polished counters reflect fixtures as bright spots, which makes a room feel harsh rather than bright. People often respond by keeping the lights low, and then the kitchen feels dim again.

Think in Layers, Not in Brightness

When a kitchen feels dark, the instinct is to buy brighter bulbs. That rarely works. A single very bright ceiling light still casts the same shadows, just harder ones. What works is putting light in the right places, from more than one direction, with control over each part.

Task lighting first

The counter is where precision matters, so it gets light from directly above. Under cabinet LED strip in an aluminum channel with a diffuser gives an even line of light along the whole run. We mount it toward the front of the cabinet bottom so the light falls on the counter rather than blasting the backsplash. An island or peninsula without cabinets above gets its task light from pendants or well placed recessed fixtures.

Ambient lighting second

General light should come from fixtures placed over the edge of the counters, roughly where your head is when you stand at them, not in a neat grid centered over the floor. This way the ambient light comes from in front of you or directly above rather than from behind. In homes with shallow joists or limited attic access, thin wafer style recessed LEDs make this much easier than old style cans.

Accent lighting last

Light inside glass front upper cabinets, or a soft strip on top of the uppers bouncing off the ceiling, adds depth. It is a small thing, but on a dark evening it makes the room feel open rather than boxed in. During a remodel it adds little cost because the wiring is already being run.

Separate control for each layer

Each layer should be on its own switch or dimmer. Bright task lights with lower ambient light is ideal for cooking. Low under cabinet light and accent light alone is pleasant for an evening glass of water. One switch for everything forces the room into a single mood.

Color Temperature and Color Quality

Light color is described in kelvin. Lower numbers look warmer and more yellow, higher numbers look cooler and more blue.

On a gray day, cool light tends to make a room feel colder, and most people here settle on 2700K to 3000K for the kitchen as a whole. Some cooks like 3000K to 3500K for task lighting so ingredients read clearly. The most important rule is consistency. Mixing a warm pendant, a cool recessed fixture and an in between under cabinet strip in one room looks messy, and it gets worse as the daylight disappears.

Color rendering matters as much as color temperature. A color rendering index of 90 or higher means wood, stone, paint and food look close to how they look in daylight. Cheap LEDs with low color rendering can make a new quartz counter look gray and dull, which is a sad outcome after spending money on it.

When to Bring In More Daylight

Electric light can do a lot, but daylight changes how a room feels in a way fixtures do not. The question is whether your house makes it practical.

Enlarging the window over the sink

If the sink wall is an exterior wall, widening the window or lowering the sill closer to the counter can transform a small mid century kitchen. It is real construction: a header sized for the new opening, a check on whether the wall carries load from above, new flashing and trim to keep rain out, and a window that meets the Washington State Energy Code. Changing an opening goes through permits and inspections with the City of Bellevue. When the span is wide or the load path is unclear, a structural engineer weighs in before anything is cut.

There is also a storage trade off. A bigger window often means fewer upper cabinets on that wall. We draw both versions with the cabinet space counted, because giving up storage in a small kitchen is a real cost.

Skylights and daylight tubes

Single story homes with attic space above the kitchen can take a skylight or a tubular daylight device. A skylight brings in more light and a patch of sky, but needs a framed shaft through the attic, careful flashing and good insulation around the shaft. In our damp climate, a poorly insulated shaft over a steamy kitchen can collect condensation. A daylight tube is smaller and simpler and works well for brightening a dark corner or an interior galley.

When daylight is not an option

Larger two story homes in Somerset, Woodridge and Bridle Trails may have a bedroom above the kitchen, and downtown condos usually cannot alter exterior glass at all. In those cases, the plan leans on surfaces and fixtures. Keep sight lines to existing windows clear, avoid tall cabinets that block the glass, and choose finishes that carry the available light deeper into the room.

Surfaces Do Half the Work

Every surface in a kitchen either reflects light or absorbs it. Paint and finish manufacturers publish a light reflectance value for their colors, and it is worth looking up before you commit. A pale matte white cabinet and a light quartz counter will send a lot of light back into the room. A dark stained door and black granite will not.

That does not mean every kitchen should be white. It means a darker cabinet color is a choice you should make knowing it will need more fixture light to feel comfortable in January. A common middle path is darker lower cabinets with lighter uppers and a pale counter, which keeps the work surface bright.

We always recommend taking samples home and looking at them at night under your actual lighting. Showroom lighting is bright and even, and it tells you very little about your own kitchen in December.

The Wiring Behind It

A good lighting plan needs somewhere to plug in. Mid century homes in Bellevue sometimes have panels with no spare space, undersized branch circuits, or in some houses aluminum branch wiring that needs specific connectors and careful handling. None of this stops a project, but it affects cost and schedule, so we have an electrician look at it during planning.

If you are thinking about switching to an induction range, which many people here are, that decision belongs at the start. Induction usually needs a dedicated circuit of its own, and the panel has to have capacity for it. It is much easier to plan the lighting circuits and the range circuit together than to discover a panel problem after the cabinets are in.

Ventilation belongs in the same conversation. With windows shut for months, cooking moisture stays in the house. A range hood ducted to the outside, rather than one that recirculates, keeps that moisture from fogging a new window and settling into the cabinets.

Refit or Remodel

Not every dark kitchen needs to be torn out. Here is how we usually think about it.

A lighting refit makes sense when the cabinet boxes are solid, the layout works for how you cook, and the main complaint is that the room is dim and flat. Under cabinet lighting, relocated ceiling fixtures, new dimmers and a lighter paint color can change the room for a fraction of a remodel. This is often a few days of work, not a few months.

A full remodel makes more sense when the cabinets are failing, the counters are damaged, the layout fights you, or you already know you want to move the sink, add an island or change the range. In that case, spending on lighting now and then ripping it out in two years is money wasted. Better to fold the lighting plan into the remodel from the start.

The kitchens we work on most often fall into a few familiar types: a mid century rambler with a small window and one ceiling light, a 1980s or 1990s home with dark wood cabinets that feel heavy in winter, and a condo kitchen with no window of its own at all. Each one points in a different direction, which is why we look before recommending anything.

What It Typically Costs

These are general ranges for Bellevue homes. Your project could land outside them.

What moves a number most is what is hidden: the condition of the wiring, whether a wall is load bearing, and how much drywall and ceiling have to be opened and repaired.

Paying for It and What Is Covered

Larger projects are typically paid in stages tied to milestones, such as signing, rough in inspection, cabinet delivery and completion, rather than in one lump. The schedule and amounts are written into the contract before work starts. If you plan to use a home equity line or other financing, it helps to have it arranged before cabinets are ordered, since lead times mean deposits come early.

On coverage, the terms of our workmanship warranty are spelled out in the written contract, and manufacturer warranties on fixtures, LED drivers, windows and skylights pass to you. Keep the paperwork. LED drivers are the part most likely to fail years down the line, and knowing which model is installed and where it is makes a replacement a quick job.

Where to Start

If your kitchen feels dark for half the year, start by paying attention to it on a winter evening. Where do you stand when you chop? Where do the shadows fall? Which corner never feels bright? That is exactly what we look at on a site visit, and it is why we like to come by after dark.
